Regional Offices
Following discussions at the IUMRS GA in 2017 (Kyoto), it was decided that regional offices of IUMRS would be established in Europe, the Americas and Asia. These regional offices were not to replace or duplicate any of the tasks of the IUMRS Head Office. They were envisaged to be hosted by IUMRS Adhering bodies: to add value to IUMRS across a range of areas, including regional assistance to countries with existing or emerging materials science activities but not well connected to IUMRS; to provide a focus on materials education in the particular region and more broadly; to potentially play a leading role in specific IUMRS projects and global initiatives; to organise and run regional workshops and more high level meetings such as the World Materials Summit; and to lead IUMRS initiatives with ISC, other International Unions, and global organisations such as UNESCO. It was also decided that Regional Offices must be prepared to provide the financial and personnel resources to support the operations of such an office. Proposals for the establishment of Regional Offices were to be submitted to the EC for approval. Recently, a proposal for establishing a Regional Office in Africa has been approved by IUMRS. This brings the number of IUMRS Regional Offices to four, IUMRS Regional Offices in Africa, hosted by African MRS, in Europe, hosted by E-MRS, and in Shanghai, China, hosted by C-MRS. The IUMRS Office in Americans is in progress.
The IUMRS African Regional Office is located in Gaborone, Botswana at the Botswana Institute for Technology Research, and Innovation (BITRI) http://www.bitri.co.bw/. The functions of the Regional Office take advantage of the existing African Materials Research Society (AfricanMRS) https://www.africanmrs.net/ Secretariat Office at BITRI.
The IUMRS Asian Regional Office is currently located in Shanghai, China. It is supported financially by Shanghai University. IUMRS and its adhering bodies in Asia acknowledge the strong support from the Chinese authorities and local academic institutions, including Shanghai University, Donghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics and Advanced Materials Alliance of the Chinese Association for Science and technology. The Asian Regional Office looks forward to serving and advancing the cooperation among all Asian material research societies and beyond.
