Conferences

To promote academic exchange and interaction among researchers and international collaboration, IUMRS, through its Adhering Bodies, co-organizes a number of conferences on a regular basis including the International Conference on Electronic Materials (IUMRS-ICEM), International Conference on Advanced Materials (IUMRS-ICAM), International Conference in Asia (IUMRS-ICA), and International Conference on Young Researchers for Advanced Materials (IUMRS-ICYRAM).

All IUMRS conferences are organized and hosted primarily by its Adhering Bodies. Even though some adhering bodies may engage professional conference organizers, the adhering body which is awarded the organization of a conference takes full responsibility to ensure the conference is of high quality and meets the high standard of IUMRS conferences. The host also takes full financial responsibility for each such conference. Interested Adhering Bodies may apply for hosting any IUMRS conference four years in advance except IUMRS-ICA which is organized by Asian Materials Research Societies on a rotating basis.

IUMRS-ICAM & IUMRS-ICEM

Both IUMRS-ICAM and IUMRS-ICEM started in 1988 and the first meetings were held in Japan,  organized by MRS-Japan. Subsequently, these two conference series became biennial, with IUMRS held in odd numbered years and IUMRS-ICEM in even numbered years. These meetings are often organized in a number of themes each comprising a number of symposia, according to research areas/topics. IUMRS-ICAM/IUMRS-ICEM typically consists of plenary sessions, invited and contributed oral presentations, and poster presentations, and other activities such as forums on special topics, exhibitions, etc. Each of these meetings attracts thousands of participants, including researchers from academia and industries. They have become very important platforms for materials researchers to present their latest research findings, interact with their peers, and establish research collaborations. The IUMRS General Assembly is usually held during these meetings.

IUMRS-ICA

IUMRS-ICA was initiated in 1993, and the first conference was held in China, in Sept. 1993, organized by C-MRS. Subsequently, the conference was held annually, with MRS-Taiwan, MRS-Korea, MRS-Japan, and MRS-India taking turn to organize it until 1998. It was changed to a biennial schedule since 2000. MRS-Singapore joined in the organization of this conference series, during the second round of rotation, after it became an adhering body of IUMRS. During the third round, MRS-Indonesia, MRS-Australia and MRS-Thailand joined the organization and the conference has been organized annually since 2010.

IUMRS-ICYRAM

IUMRS-ICYRAM was initiated by IUMRS for young researchers in 2012 which also constituted the inaugural meeting of the Global Materials Network (GMN). The mission of ICYRAM is to provide a platform for researchers under the age of 40 to present technical findings of their research, to network within the international community of other young researchers, and to increase the breadth of their general materials-based knowledge.

The inaugural ICYRAM held in Singapore in the year 2012 covered a wide range of materials research topics, with nearly 30 independent sessions, arranged under six broad themes: Biomaterials & Healthcare, Carbon-based Materials, Energy & the Environment, Electronic Materials, Magnetic & Spintronic Materials, and Optical Materials. It is the hope that each of the themes will take on the feel of a smaller workshop, promoting the free exchange of ideas and professional camaraderie within and amongst the integrated sessions. The subsequent ICYRAM conferences were held during 2014, 2016 and 2018 in China, India and Australia, respectively, organised by respective Materials Research Societies.
